Personality.
Ademnet’s life circumstances have made him bitter and wary toward strangers, but he will go to self-sacrificing lengths to protect the people he cares for. He has a blunt, crass way of speaking, and he seldom hides his disdain for nobility and religion. He is far better at snap decisions than long-term planning, and that–as well as his quick temper–lands him in many situations he would rather not be in. He means well, though. Most of the time.
background.
(cw: slavery, torture, child abuse/neglect, religious abuse, child death)

Ademnet was born in the Salinus region of Cathys, the first of seven siblings in a serf family bound to the House of Pelyar. As the eldest child, Ademnet spent much of his childhood looking after his siblings while his parents worked. At the age of ten, he joined his parents in Lord Pelyar’s employ, earning the meager “supplemental” wage given to serfs who were legally old enough to work but had not yet come of age. Despite his parents’ attempts to give him a proper Daltohan upbringing, Ademnet had far more interest in provoking his religious instructors than listening to them, earning himself a reputation as a rebel and a bad influence that would come back to haunt him later on.

When Ademnet was thirteen, his parents and five of his siblings perished in an epidemic, leaving him solely responsible for the two younger children (Tammon and Elestra) who survived. His attempts to explain the situation to Lord Pelyar’s bursar and negotiate a higher wage were rebuffed, and as a serf, he was legally barred from taking other employment without special permission from his lord. In light of his open apostasy, the Daltohan clergy refused to help him or his siblings unless he surrendered custody of the younger children to the faith and agreed never to have contact with them again. Desperate, Ademnet rejected the offer and began stealing to keep his family alive until his younger siblings were old enough to work, smuggling extra food home from his work in Lord Pelyar’s fields and breaking into shops in Salinus at night.

Two years later, shortly before Tammon would finally turn ten, Ademnet was spotted pocketing grain from Lord Pelyar’s wheat field and dragged before the lord on accusations of theft. Hoping for mercy, Ademnet admitted to the crime and explained the stolen wheat was to feed his orphaned siblings. Unmoved, Lord Pelyar forced Elestra and Tammon to watch as Ademnet was brutally, publicly flogged, then sold them both into servitude off his lands for their supposed “crimes.” As for Ademnet, he was sentenced to death by hanging, branded on the wrist to prevent his escape, and shipped off to the capital city of Aralis for execution.

As Ademnet sat in prison waiting to die, however, the crown prince of Cathys visited him with an offer to avoid his fate. He, Prince Clogen, would release Ademnet from prison in secret and provide him with weapons and provisions, if Ademnet would agree to kidnap the princess of the neighboring country of Amgovar (Cathys’s bitter enemy) as part of a plot to unify both countries by marriage. Ademnet agreed on two conditions: that Prince Clogen would free and provide for his siblings once Ademnet’s task was done, and that Prince Clogen’s men would kill Ademnet during the princess’s staged “rescue” rather than letting him face a torturous execution for the crime. Now on the run as a fugitive, Ademnet is determined to succeed at his quest and secure a decent life for his siblings--even at the cost of his own.

impressions.
appearance. Ademnet is a short, shaggy-haired fifteen-year-old who gives off the (correct) impression of having been chronically underfed. He has multiple scars, only one of which is readily visible: a single, thin whip scar on his left cheek. The rest--extensive whip scars on his back and shoulders and a brand on his right wrist in the shape of a circle around a crescent moon--he keeps carefully hidden at all times.

attire. Ademnet dresses like your average fantasy novel peasant: a thick wool cloak, long pants, leather boots, and a long-sleeved, belted tunic. All of his clothes have seen heavy use, and none of them are fancy.

voice. Ademnet has a strongly lower-class (in his world) manner of speaking, with lots of dropped consonants and unusual, highly regional phrasing choices. His speech is peppered with curse words from his home world, and his voice is still prone to the occasional pubescent crack. He has a surprisingly good singing voice.

content warnings. Ademnet’s backstory includes slavery, torture, child abuse/neglect, religious abuse, homophobia, and the deaths of multiple family members, including children. He’s currently on a suicide mission to kidnap and potentially torture a woman he doesn’t know.

shipping. Ademnet is a closeted gay teenager on a suicide mission who thinks that opening up to anybody is likely to kill him faster. You’re unlikely to get anywhere on this front, but if chemistry develops, I’m open.

physical affection. He’s unlikely to initiate except with someone he’s very close to, and the fact the only physical contact he’s had recently has been violent will make him skittish about being touched. He could really, really use a hug, though (not that he'll ever admit it).

violence. Go for it. In general, Ademnet would rather not start a fight, but he has no remorse about ending one. He's skilled with knives, but he's also perfectly happy to throw hands. He has a quick temper, and he fights dirty--his time as a thief and a fugitive have taught him that honorable fighting is bullshit that will get you killed.

magic/special powers. Ademnet has none of his own and is deeply, superstitiously afraid of magic. OOC, other characters using powers on him without warning is fair game. IC, he will not react well.

Personality

What is your character most afraid of? How are they defined by this fear? (100-300 words)
Ademnet lives in perpetual fear that everything he has and the people close to him could be snatched away from him at any moment. He lost his parents and nearly all of his siblings when he was thirteen, and he was arrested, tortured, and exiled from his home and friends two years after that. Even now that he’s been pardoned, given a noble title, and effectively adopted into the royal family, most of the nobility reject him and he no longer fits in with the common folk, either. He never feels secure, and that franticness resonates through his interactions with other people and the ferocity with which he defends the people he’s close to. It also makes him reckless with his own safety. What’s the point of planning for the long term when he’s already on borrowed time? Better to die on his own terms than go back on a scaffold again.

What is your character's greatest desire? How are they defined by this desire? (100-300 words)
Ademnet would say his greatest desire is justice for the common folk and for his loved ones to be safe and happy, but the real answer is that he wants a normal, quiet life. He’s a family-minded homebody at heart, though he understands that accepting a lordship for the security the title would give him–and consequently becoming famous throughout his homeland–has severely limited how quiet and normal his life will ever be. In general, he prioritizes the needs of the people he cares about above his own (partly out of love, partly out of an overdeveloped sense of duty and the fear that he won’t be loved if he isn’t useful) and is driven by a strong personal sense of right and wrong, even if that sense runs counter to society or existing law.

How will not having memories change your character? What core personality traits, if any, will change? How? (200-300 words)
Ademnet will be joining Well without any memories of either his loved ones or of his biggest traumas, which will make him less frantic and more trusting. Until he remembers he has people waiting/counting on him, he’ll be more interested in living it up and getting to know the people of Wellstone than in trying to leave it. He’ll finally have the community he craves, a never-ending supply of free food, and reassurance that nobody around him (including himself) can permanently die. To him, that’s a pretty effective sales pitch.

Although he doesn’t remember having been made a lord, those experiences will still leave visible imprints on him. Aside from the literacy and sword skills he inexplicably (to him) has, he’s gotten used to being much more assertive with people he perceives as “above” him in status than he ever would have dared to be before leaving home. He will gravitate toward the knight/cavalier cadre of Wellstone, despite having no conscious reason to expect he’d fit in there. He’s going to be deeply concerned about the welfare of the NPCs and ghosts, who he’ll assume are victims in need of rescue or justice. He’ll also be slower to warm up to anyone who identifies as or behaves like nobility–he may befriend them anyway, but those people will start out with a serious mark against them in Ademnet’s book.

Memories

You have 10 memory points. How will you use them?

Skill: 1 point.
He can read, but he doesn’t remember learning how to.

Skill 2 points.
Weapons proficiency. He’s self-taught with knives, and has been formally trained with swords, so he’s skilled with both. (He has no memory of having been trained on the latter, however. He just has the skill.)

Minor memory: 1 point.
He remembers the tenets of the Daltohist religion he was raised with. He doesn’t believe any of it, but he remembers! (Bonus: this also means he remembers how to blaspheme. It’s the little joys.)

Minor memory: 1 point.
He remembers how the “bark” system for branding condemned criminals in his world works. He knows what the brand on his arm means in that context, but doesn’t remember getting it or how he earned it.

Minor memory: 1 point.
He remembers skinny-dipping with other boys in a pond and feeling some kind of way (read: very gay) about it.

Minor memory: 1 point.
He remembers every word of his favorite off-color drinking song.

Relationship: 2 points.
He remembers that he was a serf owing fealty to Lord Pelyar. The feelings he associates with that name are disgust, hatred, and fear, but he doesn’t remember specifics.

Points remaining: 1

IN CHARACTER

PHYSICAL AFFECTION: He’s unlikely to initiate except with someone he’s very close to, and the fact he's gotten so little of it in recent years will make him skittish about receiving it. He could really, really use it, though (not that he'll ever admit it).

PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: He's skilled with knives and well-trained in swords, but he's also perfectly happy to throw hands. He has a quick temper, and he fights dirty--his time as a thief and a fugitive have taught him that honorable fighting is bullshit that will get you killed. In general, he'd rather not start a fight, but he has no remorse about ending one. He's got a trail of bodies to his name, none of which he particularly regrets.

ROMANCE / FLIRTING / RELATIONSHIPS: He's gay as hell. His years spent in full-time survival mode (and as a gay teenager in a homophobic society) have really screwed with him on the romance front--he deeply craves human connection, but getting romantically close to other men sends him into a panic spiral of fear and guilt.

MAGIC ABILITIES: He’s an ordinary human. He's also deeply superstitious about/distrustful of magic.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES / MEDICAL CONDITIONS: He’s an ordinary human. He has pronounced scar tissue on his back from a past near-fatal whipping, a single whip scar on his left cheek, and a brand on his right wrist (a circle around a crescent moon).

OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS / POTENTIAL TRIGGERS: His backstory includes torture, child abuse/neglect, religious abuse, homophobia, and the deaths of multiple siblings in childhood.

OUT OF CHARACTER

BACKTAGGING: Yes.

FOURTHWALLING: No.

THREADHOPPING: Yes, but clear it with me first.

I NEED WARNINGS FOR: Nothing.
